Paul Taylor: Grand Gestures, Grand Space
When asked whether he has a favorite work out of his repertory, Taylor says, “No, I’m always interested in the one I’m working on. Once they are done, I put them in the back of my mind.” This, more than anything else, may be what the Paul Taylor Dance Company is all about; the beauty is located in the shift from one thing to another, between the coming and the leaving.
In Taylor’s work, there is darkness and there is light; there are slow, cautious steps, and giant, fearless leaps; and often, they are all right next to each other.
At the photo shoot for this piece, I thought it would be a breeze to get the dancers into interesting positions, as Taylor’s dances are made up of them. But, it became apparent just how fleeting each moment was as we tried to capture Annmaria Mazzini and Michael Trusnovec, as they slid like quicksilver from one fabulous, momentary tableau to the next.
“Changes” is more than the name of one of Taylor’s newest works; change is the proof of forward motion. “Change is reality. There is always going to be change in a company like ours. We are a touring company. We exist in different spaces endlessly,” Tomlinson says.
The Paul Taylor Dance Company continues to prove that they are not defined by the space that they are in, but by the vast and unbridled creative space of a great American artist’s mind, and the dancers that work every day to offer us a glimpse into that grand, ever-shifting landscape.
