Cuban Pete in Orlando for SalSation 2001
MIAMI - Legendary Mambo King, Cuban Pete, and his partner, Barbara Craddock, will be at Walt Disney World Resort September 13-16, 2001, as part of SalSation 2001. The International Dance Organization's World Salsa Championship and the United States Salsa Championship are being held as part of SalSation 2001, a three-day and three-night Salsa celebration with salsa music, workshops, lectures, dances and competitions.
Pedro "Cuban Pete" Aguilar, known internationally as the Maestro of Mambo and the King of the Latin Beat and his talented partner and manager, Barbara Craddock, will be teaching two one-hour workshops, one each on Friday, September 14th and Saturday, September 15th, time TBA. The Mambo/Salsa Workshop En Clave will focus on the authentic rhythm (clave) of Latin music, the fundamental six steps of Latin dance(s), and its application in patterns, turns and styling techniques
Cuban Pete and Barbara made dance history for their work in the preservation of clave with Miami City Ballet's crossover sensation; "Mambo No. 2 a.m." Their collaboration with Edward Villella forever melded mambo with classical ballet. Cuban Pete and Barbara have appeared on international, national and local television and radio programs and teach "sold-out" workshops coast-to-coast. Cuban Pete has won numerous dance awards and will be serving as part of the event's celebrity-judging panel.
The event begins Thursday, September l3th with a Welcome Party and the United States Salsa Championship at Disney's Pleasure Island. Five couples will be selected to represent the United States in the IDO World Salsa Championship being held on Friday, September 14th at Disney's Wide World of Sports. Additionally, spectators will also enjoy an array of other Latin and Ballroom dance competitions. The Farewell Salsa Blast will be held at the House of Blues at Downtown Disney West Side on Saturday, September 15th. New York DJ Elvira and Los Angeles DJ Frank, as well as live music by Johnny Polanco from Los Angeles and other notable bands will provide music.
Event coordinator, Mark Midkiff, says, "We are happy to bring the IDO World Salsa Championships to the tropics. It's only natural that a salsa championship would be danced here, so close to its origins in Cuba and Puerto Rico. This promises to be a fantastic weekend for participants and spectators alike. We are expecting competitors from over twenty countries. Anyone who appreciates Latin music and dancing will thoroughly enjoy themselves."
