Hubbard Street 2 Announces Choreographic Competition Winners, Summer Performance Schedule & 2001-02 Company Roster
CHICAGO - Hubbard Street 2, the second company of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, announces the three winners of its third annual National Choreographic Competition, created to identify emerging choreographers. Each winner will spend a one-week residency at the HSDC studios and create an original work for Hubbard Street 2. The competition is sponsored exclusively by Philip Morris Companies Inc.
Nineteen-year-old Brian Enos, a dancer with Houston Ballet, was in residence during the week of June 24. Enos, who began choreographing at age 15, has created works for Ballet Austin II, Houston Ballet Academy and Houston Ballet. He created "Landing" for Houston Ballet at the age of 18, becoming the youngest choreographer in that company's history.
Alex Ketley, who began dancing at age eight in Columbia, Maryland, was in residence during the week of July 8. He has trained with The Washington Ballet, The School of American Ballet and Denmark's Royal Danish Ballet. He joined the San Francisco Ballet in 1994, leaving the company to explore his interests in choreography and the collaborative process, co-founding The Foundry in 1998. The Foundry has performed extensively throughout the San Francisco Bay area and The Netherlands. Ketley has been a guest artist with several companies, including Lines Contemporary Ballet.
Originally from Singapore, Priscilla Nathan-Murphy was in residence the week of August 19. She has trained with the Royal Academy of Dancing in classical ballet, as well as modern and Oriental forms of dance, and has been a company member of Space/Dance/Theatre and Chrysalis Repertory Dance Theatre. She currently teaches ballet, modern, improvisation, composition and creative movement at Houston Ballet Academy (the official school of Houston Ballet), Houston's High School for Performing and Visual Arts and Texas Institute for Arts in Education. Her choreography has been performed by Houston Ballet Academy and Houston Grand Opera, among others.
The winners, selected by HS2 Artistic Director Julie Nakagawa Bottcher, HS 2 Managing Director Andreas Bottcher and HSDC Artistic Director Jim Vincent, were chosen from a record 130 applicants.
Hubbard Street 2 also has announced its roster of dancers for the 2001-02 season. Returning HS2 members include Eric Chase, Erin Derstine, Lisa Johanna Keskitalo, Christopher Tierney and Anne Zivolich. New to Hubbard Street 2 is Tobin del Cuore, 22, selected from more than 260 applicants nationwide.
Hubbard Street 2 cultivates young professional dancers and choreographers and is the centerpiece of HSDC's community education initiative, presenting programs in schools, community centers, theatres and park districts to more than 20,000 people annually.
