Hubbard Street 2 Announces Choreographic Competition Winners
Chicago - Hubbard Street 2, the second company of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, announces the
three winners of its fourth annual National Choreographic Competition, created to identify emerging
choreographers. Each winner will spend a one-week residency at the HSDC studios and create an original
work for Hubbard Street 2. The competition is sponsored by Philip Morris Companies Inc., which is
recognized worldwide as a preeminent arts sponsor and widely known for its support of dance.
Katarzyna Skarpetowska, a native of Warsaw, Poland, worked with HS2 June 3-7 and conducted a master class June 8. She received a BFA from The Juilliard School and has performed with the Juilliard Dance Ensemble and on Broadway in the musical "Metro," directed and choreographed by Janusz Jozefowicz. Her choreography has been performed at venues around the country. She is currently a dancer with The Parsons Dance Company in New York.
Meredith Rainey, originally from Florida, will teach master classes August 3 and 10 and work with
HS2 August 5-9. He has danced with Milwaukee Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Complexions and, for
the past 13 years, Pennsylvania Ballet. Launching his choreographic career with the Off-Center Ballet in
1992, he has created more than 40 works for soloists and companies including the Delaware,
Pennsylvania and Phrenic New Ballets, as well as the Philadelphia Orchestra and several schools. His
work also has been performed at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Miami International Ballet Festival and
the Russian American Ballet Residency Project at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival.
Camille A. Brown will conduct a master class on August 24 and work with HS2 August 26-30.
Originally from Jamaica, New York, she recently received a BFA in dance from the North Carolina School
of the Arts. Currently a dancer with Ronald K. Brown/Evidence, her choreographic work has been
performed by Sidra Bell Dance and in Earl Mosley's Diversity of Dance, as well as at the annual Mateo
Festival in North Carolina.
The winners, selected by HS2 Artistic Director Julie Nakagawa Bottcher, HS2 Managing Director
Andreas Bottcher and HSDC Artistic Director Jim Vincent, were chosen from nearly 120 applicants.
