Mobile Ballet Co.

Winthrop Corey, artistic director of the Mobile Ballet Company, was awarded a $10,000 Fellowship grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Fellowship grants are awarded to individual artists based on merit of work, career achievement, career potential and service to the state. This award comes on the heel of Corey's full-length original ballet "A Streetcar Named Desire," which had its premiere in Mobile, Alabama on March 9th.

Corey has held the position of artistic director of the Mobile Ballet Company for the past 16 years. During that time he has staged the full-length classics: "The Nutcracker," "Swan Lake," "The Sleeping Beauty," "Romeo & Juliet," "Cinderella," "Coppelia" and "Giselle." He has choreographed numerous repertoire works including, "Seppuku," "Mein Himmel" and "Huapango." His two original full-length ballets, "Dracula" and "A Streetcar Named Desire," both have met with critical success and become audience favorites in Mobile.

Corey was a principal dancer with both The Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the National Ballet of Canada and was well known for his impeccable technique in the classical repertoire. He received international recognition dancing opposite Rudolph Nureyev in Jose Limon's classic ballet "The Moor's Pavane."

Corey, who is also a summer faculty member of the Joffrey Ballet School in New York, is frequently sought after for his expertise in Petipa' s style and twice was a coach for the New York International Ballet Competition, staging the Act III pas de deux from "The Sleeping Beauty." Corey, a well-known guest teacher, has taught master classes in the United States, Canada and Europe.
