What's Hot? What's Not! Tati Sez

Tatiana Cardenas is the name, and I am your newest style guru. I am a second year pre-med student at the University of Miami, majoring in microbiology. Recently, I was offered a job as a member of the "42 Street" National Touring Company. As a result, I will take off one year and a half in order to fulfill my life-long dream of performing in a Broadway musical. So folks, get ready because I will be taking you to all corners of the country in search of an answer to the million dollar question: What is America wearing? Since the tragic date of September 11, 2001 we as Americans have been celebrating and showing our love for this country by printing the American flag on virtually every and any item possible. From sandals to shirts, from earrings to belly rings and from nail polish to purses. This fall will not be any different. Through fashion's looking glass we will continue to see a heightened sense of "Americanism."

In the fall months to come we are also going to see a lot of peasant-style clothing. Peasant tops usually are made of linen with colorful embroidered accents on them. Depending on the designer they will have different cuts, shapes and sizes. This fun little addition is going to be a hit and is a must have. We will see low cut, faded jeans, some of which are tinted with colors such as beige, brown and red. Typically these jeans are faded and vintage looking, which is a characteristic of this new peasant fad. The peasant jeans are not body-type specific, which is great because all of us can wear them!

"What about the colors this fall?" you ask. Well, drum roll please...we are looking at a fall season filled with hunter greens, pale yellows, browns, and of course lots of beige. These strong but subtle natural colors will make your wardrobe look simple but well thought out. Remember, the key word is simplicity. I have a motto that goes a little something like this: "There is no such thing as bad colors just bad traffic." You see even if a random hue is brought in to a specific color scheme, the outfit can still work. Where the problems start to form is when we don't know how to incorporate this new color, which in turn creates very bad traffic. You can work this new color in by making it a simple, subtle and down-to-earth accent; nothing too rambunctious or out of the ordinary. The addition of a new color into any given outfit can take the form of something as simple as a scarf. Scarves are wonderful color vectors because they are classic and they can be used as belts, headbands and anything else you can come up with. Accessories can do any number of things for your outfit. Again you just need to find the right accessory in order to promote accents and in order to prevent "traffic."

Now for those of us who have 90-degree winters and find it a little bit uncomfortable to wear jeans all the time, I have a solution for you. Being a Miami girl, I know what it is like to go into my closet and want to wear the newest fall fashions but can't because it feels like the Sahara Desert in the middle of the summer. Luckily designers understand as well and have come up with fabulous ideas for the hot winter regions of the US. The solution: terri cloth. Yup, you heard me! Everything from gym clothes to pajamas; it's everywhere! The reason that terri cloth is so effective in very warm and humid climates is because it actually absorbs moisture and keeps the skin nice and fresh even on an unbearably hot day. Amazing, huh!!

Next month I will be writing you from the mid-west. America's heartland. Until then, happy shopping!! •
