Joe Vilane, owner of the Joe Vilane Dance & Theatre School and the Ballroom Dance Center, died in October 2005 at St. Vincent's Hospital. Mr. Vilane was an experienced Broadway dancer who taught his craft for 50 years, starting in Brooklyn in 1955. That Broadway connection is something that always differentiated his studios from others; from the street can be seen the lobby chandelier, Broadway and Hollywood posters and salmon pink walls with mirrors, all of which evoke a particular old-world glamour.

His Connecticut studio has been in place since 1962, so he was something of a local legend. His yearly recitals at the Klein auditorium in Bridgeport were major events. Thousands of students, mostly kids but including adults of all ages, have passed through his studio. The studio remains in operation under the direction of Robert Fleming, the studio's manager for 27 years, also an accomplished dancer steeped in the Broadway tradition.
