Dance Council Announces 2006 Scholarships

Dance Council, based in Dallas, Texas has awarded its 2006 scholarships to exceptionally good dancers who demonstrate ability, artistry and passion. To submit an application, the dancer must be a current Dance Council member and between the ages 13-21.

Scholarships are funded by donations and fundraising events. Some of the scholarships are named as a tribute to an individual; Other scholarships honor the memory of a friend, relative or associate by providing a gift for the living.

The Tom Adams Scholarship, funded by Gayle Ziaks Halperin, is full tuition plus room and board to attend American Dance Festival, Durham, North Carolina. The Natalie Skelton Scholarship is full tuition, room and board to attend Glenda Brown Choreography Project in late July.

Other scholarships recognizing modern dancers are Jerry Bywaters Cochran and Charles Andrew Kulp to attend a summer program, a workshop, or for higher education Darryl Sneed Memorial Scholarship is available to attend summer intensive of Dallas Black Dance Theatre in July.

Ballet dancers are invited to for apply for scholarships named for Caryn Halpern Sechrest, a great lover of ballet, Kevin Brown, the late principal dancer with Dallas Ballet, and Nadyne Legere, whose vision included the formation of Irving Ballet Company. Financial support is $500 to attend a ballet workshop, dance festival or extended program.

Jazz dancers may apply for Buster Cooper Scholarship. Ballet as well as jazz dancers are encouraged to apply for Fred Kelly Memorial Scholarship, funded by Fred's family and friends, and Texie Waterman Memorial Scholarship, funded by Texie's husband Hugh Howard. The Thom Clower Scholarship is for a Male Dancer to attend a resident program or workshop.

Dallas Summer Musicals School of Musical Theatre offers a summer intensive scholarship and as well the memorial to Gregory Hines.

Opportunities for tap dancers include Margaret Rylatt Scholarship funded by her daughter Lynne Richardson, who said, "In memory of my mother who with very limited resources encouraged my aspirations. There is no way I can repay her but I can pass it on."

Gene, Louse and Fred Kelly Scholarship is a partnership with 3rd Coast Rhythm Project in San Antonio, Texas in early August. Rhythm Junkies also underwrite funding for attendance at 3rd Coast. Gene Pflug Scholarship partners with Soul 2 Sole Tap Festival in Austin, Texas in early June.

South Dallas Dance Festival Scholarship offers support of $300 to assist a black dancer to continue her/his studies at any studio, academy or institution. Recipient is guest artist at South Dallas Dance Festival in November.

New York Baroque Dance Scholarship funds tuition attend workshop to learn this 18th century art form. These ballet movements are much more than recreation and reconstruction from the past. The summer workshop is held at Texas Woman's University, Denton, Texas and conducted by Catherine Turocy, who has received fellowships from National Endowment for the Arts and has served as consultant for Miami City Ballet and American Ballet Theatre.

Conte de Loyo Scholarship gives preference to a dancer studying Spanish, flamenco, ethnic, folkloric or folk dance.

Arathi School of Dance offers tuition to study Bharata Natyam, a discipline of Indian Dance at a summer workshop with a guest artist in Dallas, Texas. ICHF Scholarship is financial support for a dancer primarily trained in Indian Classical Dance to attend any workshop, festival or program. Dancer may choose to study Indian Classical Dance or any other traditional technique.

Submission requirements include a Letter of Recommendation from applicant's dance instructor and a dance photo. Videotape should include one or two variations or solo dances demonstrating the qualifications of the dancer. Applicant must include a copy of the most recent report card. (Good GPA is a plus.) The brief biographical statement should include all dance study, reason for application and how the scholarship will use. There are no geographical requirements to apply.
