David Howard, one of the most distinguished ballet teachers of our generation, will celebrate his 40th year of teaching in America this fall. Born and educated in England, he received his early training from the Cone-Ripman School, now known as the Arts Educational School in London. At the age of 17, he was awarded the Adeline Genee Medal, the highest honor a British dance student can receive. As a young principal dancer at London's Palladium Theatre, he was honored to appear in a Royal Command Performance before Queen Elizabeth II. He later joined Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet (now The Royal Ballet) and also danced with the National Ballet of Canada.
In 1966, Mr. Howard came to New York to teach and later direct the Harkness Ballet School, where he instructed many notable dancers including Makarova, Baryshnikov and Gelsey Kirkland. In 1977, Mr. Howard opened his own school in New York City. In 2000, he was Artistic Director of the First World Congress of Ballet and Contemporary Dance in Mexico. Currently, he teaches at Steps on Broadway, Broadway Dance Center, the New School University and Eugene Lang College; he also coaches several of the American Ballet Theatre's up-and-coming stars in addition to teaching internationally.
The David Howard Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit 501(c)(3), was established to help young dancers and choreographers, to create a dance library, and to sponsor research work connected with dancers' diets, dance-related injuries and kinesiology. Mr. Howard is the recipient of the Dance Masters of America Award and is a prominent member of the boards of numerous dance-affiliated companies and publications. He has been profiled in People magazine and Dance Teacher magazine, and has been invited to serve as Chairman of National Dance Week 2007.
