Bunheads

Bunheads(R) is a company for dancers by dancers, and the products they continue to offer serve every need you could think of. They have covered dancers from head to toe, including a hold-everything dance bag to organize the products oh so tidily.

New Bunheads(R) additions make their debut regularly, and the latest additions to their repertoire are stars indeed. So, from head to toe, let's go:

"Stage Styles" is a hair kit to take you some elegant steps higher than the basic bunhead look, traditional though it is. In the kit, you'll find a brush guaranteed to pull hair back to a sleek look, an easy-grip water bottle that holds just enough for the job, and clear, colorful how-to cards with three professional hairstyles designed by Melinda Roy - former Principal Dancer with the New York City Ballet. Learn the "Double Cruller" for the low bun style needed for the Romantic era, the "Danish Twist" for the flattering medium to high bun for the more modern ballets, and the "Croissant Classique" - that superbly flattering French twist favored by Balanchine.

The only things you will need to add will be a hairnet and hairpins, and you know that Bunheads(R) has those in different colors, strengths and lengths. Their pins can hold even the thickest of manes through multiple fouettes without having to use so many that you set off security alarms.

For your hair, to go with those sparkling earrings they introduced last year, look for their "Dream Dancer" rhinestone additions. You've your choice of pink or clear crystal creations with three different backings - a fine metal spiral to twist into your hair; sets of tiny clips to grip firmly, or long pins that would look regal and would slide along that "Croissant Classique" securely.

"Backstage Basics" is a slim, lightweight case of 20 makeup cards that will give you that doe-eyed look onstage, letting your personality shine through. The cards take you carefully through the full ballet make-up process. These pictures are worth a thousand words, and dancers will be both picture and stage ready after following the directions.

Slip those items into the "Backstage Beauty Box" and you're set to leave for the theatre. The box is a small miracle of engineering and a generous offering of all but base make-up and powder. It comes with:
á five palettes of four eyeshadows for a choice of twenty colors to use and blend.
á four blushes.
á a contour color.
á four lipsticks in various red shades.
á a square and a round mirrored lid for capping off your shadow or rouge in case you need to carry just one of each.
á one eye and one lip pencil.
á six brushes secured in a safe, noncrushable place in the lid.
á a pair of "Performance Lashes" and,
á batteries.

Batteries? This case also comes with its own lighting. Bunheads(R) cautions users that "the box lights are for aesthetic only and are not intended to provide ideal lighting for makeup application." We'd like to add that any extra lights are a boon in any case in any place. This is a light, well-trimmed black train case that will be a delight and an honor to carry.

Tiny toes and sizes up to the Trocks will love the new Bunheads(R) "Ouch Pouches" in small and large. The phrase "New and improved" really means something here. Their new "Ouch Pouches" give better bunion coverage, offer a deeper cut "V" vamp to slip invisibly into your pointe shoes, a more foot-shaped shape, if you will, to hug the foot and stay put, and an "enhanced gel formation" that "helps prevent 'wear spots' or bottoming out."

Now ten years old, Bunheads(R) keeps thinking of things dancers need, sometimes before that need arises. A new service is skin care. Check out their hotline for make-ups tips and skin consultation from a licensed cosmetologist. Email this service at beauty@bunheads.com.

They have a new site at www.dreamdancerbybunheads.com. It is a charming site for budding dancers, with items for little ones that you'll be hearing more about in a future issue of Dancer.
