Orlando Ballet has been awarded first-time funding from the City of Kissimmee and Osceola County in support of "The Nutcracker." Orlando Ballet will present "The Nutcracker" for the first time in Osceola County at the Osceola Performing Arts Center, December 14 -17, 2006...Luz San Miguel and Christian Laverde Konig, principal dancers of the Milwaukee Ballet will appear as guest artists in the Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet's production of "The Nutcracker." The performances will take place at the Civic Theatre in Shreveport, Louisiana on December 8 and 10, 2006...Sara Webb, principal dancer of the Houston Ballet, and Ian Casady, soloist of the Houston Ballet, will appear as guest artists in the Victoria Ballet Theatre's production of "The Nutcracker." Performances will take place at the Leo J. Welder Center for the Performing Arts in Victoria, Texas on December 7, 8, 9 and 10, 2006.
Carnival Center for the Performing Arts has accepted a $250,000 grant from Knight Foundation in support of the Center's Merce in Miami festival. This city-wide celebration showcases the life and work of legendary choreographer Merce Cunningham through two weeks of performances at the Center by the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, in its inaugural visit to Miami, and creative collaborations with Museum of Contemporary Art, New World School of the Arts, Florida Dance Association, Miami Dade College, and South Florida Composers Alliance, the interdisciplinary Sounds Arts Workshop (iSAW), and the Subtropics Experimental Music and Sound Arts Festival.
Scheduled to take place in February and March 2007, Merce in Miami will include the world premiere of eyeSpace, a piece commissioned by Carnival Center specifically for the occasion, and a restaging of Cunningham's mammoth "Ocean." "CRWDSPCR" (1993), "Crises" (1960) and "Split Sides" (2003, with music by the bands Radiohead and Sigur Ros) - three major works from the Merce Cunningham Dance Company repertoire - will also be performed on the stages of Carnival Center during Merce in Miami. Ballet Florida's 2006-2007 season launches with a world premiere by Jerry Opdenaker, his third work commissioned by the company. Opdenaker, a veteran dancer with Ballet Florida for 14 years, retired in May 2006 to pursue his career as a choreographer. The program also includes Dominic Walsh's "Bello," featuring live music from the Mercury Baroque Ensemble, and concludes with Ben Stevenson's "Bartok Concerto."

Christopher Fleming will create "Helen Keller: A Tribute to Her Teacher," for Dancing Wheels, and will create a new ballet for the students of the Orlando Ballet School in celebration of the Orlando Ballet's 25th anniversary during the 2006-07 season. Dancing Wheels is America's premier integrated dance company -- a modern dance company that integrates professional stand-up and sit-down (wheelchair) dancers. Dancing Wheels is directed by Mary Verdi-Fletcher. The world
premiere performances by Dancing Wheels will take place from November 18-20, 2006 at the Cuyahoga Community College (Eastern Campus) in Cleveland, Ohio. The world premiere performances for the Orlando Ballet School will take place on April 27 and 28, 2007 in Orlando, Florida.
The Imperial Dance Company, of Merritt Island, Florida, comprised of 30 dancers ages 10 - 18, was
nominated and then was selected to receive the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation--David R. Roberts Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award.
