Nevada Ballet Theatre

Nineteen students from The Academy of Nevada Ballet Theatre are recipients of the annual Liberace Scholarship, awarded by the Liberace Foundation. The Liberace Foundation for the Performing and Creative Arts was founded in 1976. In 1980, the foundation awarded its first major scholarship series, giving $10,000 scholarships to five learning institutions across the country. Since then, five million dollars in scholarship grants and approximately 2,200 students in over 100 universities, schools and organizations have benefited from these scholarships.

The 2007 Scholarship awardees are: Catherine Dube, Ernest Constantine Reynolds, Kelly Callahan, Isabella Schleiker, Monika Haczkiewicz, Austin Xi, Hannah Sandhu, Glynis Irving, Nathalie Zhang, Penelope Borg, Aiste Cechaviciute, Alexandra Keft, Victoria Kennedy, Celine Eskardari, Jorin Stinar-Medina, Maciel Ramos, Katia Brim, Rusne Kuzmickas and Paris Bramson. Judging for these scholarships were Artistic Director Bruce Steivel, Academy Director Victoria Stocki-Kim and faculty member Ella Gourkova.

In order to audition, students were nominated by an Academy of Nevada Ballet Theatre faculty member. Criteria for nomination included: dedication, personality, leadership, attendance, talent and merit. Nevada Ballet Theatre has been the recipient of the Liberace Foundation's generosity since 2000. Each year, local arts organizations are encouraged to apply for this grant for their students who have shown exemplary effort in the areas of music, theatre, dance and the visual arts. Students are deemed "Liberace Scholars" for the year and are encouraged to use this opportunity to grow and strengthen in their particular area of the arts.

In addition to the money allocated to the Academy for scholarships, Nevada Ballet Theatre's apprentice program (under the professional company of dancers) is being sponsored in part by the Liberace Foundation for the 2007-2008 season.

Nevada Ballet Theatre also awards its own special scholarship - The Nancy Houssels Scholarship, named after Nevada Ballet Theatre Co-Founder and Co-Chairwoman, affords one student per year the opportunity to develop their talent and love of dance by covering a full season's tuition.
