World Ballet Competition Electrifies the International Dance Community

The inaugural World Ballet Competition was held in downtown Orlando, Florida between July 5-8, 2007 at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center. This event brought together an array of international talent both on and off stage. The Orlando and Central Florida area had never experienced such quality dancers together in one event. Over 50 competitors battled to win the $10,000 Grand Prix Award using a unique scoring system, similar to gymnastics. Scores were posted immediately after each competitor danced, with the jury giving a score from 4 to 10 on both artistry and technique. The winner had to be consistent and flawless throughout the entire competition due to the tough scoring system. Though the jury did not award the Grand Prix prize, the top Senior Male, Joseph Gatti, and Female, Natalia Domracheva, still walked away with $7,000 each. Other winners received cash prizes from $250 to $5,000 and were able to share the stage among celebrated stars in a spectacular evening performance of the "Gala of the Stars."

Vasile Petrutiu, general director for Central Florida Ballet, envisioned, founded and directed the World Ballet Competition. Recognizing the need for a well-structured dance environment, Petrutiu continued to pursue the competition even after efforts to receive a local grant were turned down. "It doesn't take long for people to see the validity of such an international event. It will raise the antennae about what's here. It's not just about helping Central Florida Ballet," Petrutiu said. "It would help Orlando, our state of Florida and ultimately the United States of America".

And everybody it did help. Aspiring artists and dancers shared their passion for dancing by competing for top prizes in the Pre-Competitive (ages 10-13), Junior (ages 14-17), and Senior (ages 18-22) divisions in the World Ballet Competition. Members of the audience revelled in the thrill of watching the accomplished competitors communicate artistically as they brought enthusiasm, discipline, and artistry unmatched by any other competition.

The closing event, the "Gala of the Stars," thrilled the audience with classical ballet and modern arrangements staged and danced by winning competitors and distinguished professionals. Sascha Radetsky, star of the acclaimed film "Center Stage," delighted the audience with his refined jumps and eclectic personality. Other performers, such as Antigravity, an acrobatic and aerial group, gave unique and thrilling performances. The Orlando Sentinel's dance critic remarked on it as "...the most improbable, strength-testing series of lifts I have ever seen."

The overwhelming success of the World Ballet Competition has proven to local community leaders that the Orlando area is now ready to support the international dance platform. With the achievements attained by the inaugural World Ballet Competition this year, it is sure to become a staple in the local and international dance arena. For more information: www.wbcorlando.com
