American Academy of Ballet Summer School
American Academy of Ballet Summer School
Ever since they first started 10 years ago, Mignon Furman, the director of the American Academy of Ballet, has always invited faculty at the top of the ballet-teaching profession.
Making their way to the summer school in residence at Purchase College SUNY, in response to Furman’s invitation to teach, are not only a prominent and well-known teachers in America, but a cluster of teachers from overseas. This combination of American and overseas teachers gives summer school an enhanced aura of the universality of the tradition of classical ballet.
Guest teachers from England include Susie Cooper (head of dance at the Urdang Academy); Jay Jolley (assistant director of the Royal Ballet School); Brian Loftus (teaches in England, Japan, France, Israel and the U.S.); and Galina Samsova, who sets classical ballets on many companies. Lynnette Kelley teaches at the Goh Academy in Canada, as well as teaching in several other countries. Last year, Anne Marie Vessel Schluter, director of the Royal Danish Ballet School, was a guest teacher, but her busy schedule kept her away in 2007. The students also have the opportunity of enjoying live music from seven very accomplished musicians.
Perhaps the international character of the summer school is the reason why students from overseas enrollin it. In addition to the some 300 students who attend summer school from practically every state, students have traveled from England, Canada, Sweden, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Israel, Costa Rica, France, Greece and Mexico to benefit from tutelage under the distinguished faculty.
