The Colburn Dance Institute Hosts Master Teacher David Howard for a Three-Day Ballet Workshop. Internationally recognized ballet teacher David Howard leads teacher training workshops, master classes for students and advanced-professional level classes.

The Colburn Dance Institute, Los Angeles, will host renowned ballet teacher David Howard for a three-day master teacher workshop at the Institute’s new studio in the Japanese-American Cultural and Community Center in Little Tokyo. From February 22 – 24, Howard will conduct daily classes including teacher training workshops, ballet master classes and advanced/professional level ballet classes. Known for guiding some of the greatest classical dancers in the field, Howard will be focusing specifically on teaching both instructors and dancers skills for formulating the optimum ballet class.

“It is a crucial component in the development of all dancers—both established professionals and developing talents—to have the valuable insight of masters in the field,” commented The Colburn Dance Institute’s director, Glenn Edgerton. “We are delighted to be providing our community of teachers, professional dancers and our Professional Training Program students with the opportunity to work with David here at the Institute’s new studios,” commented co-director Leslie Carothers-Aromaa.

Howard’s unique methodology is founded in a scientific philosophy of movement involving kinetics and anatomical principles. He approaches the acquisition of ballet through dynamics of movement, musicality and energy patterns. He aims, through this kinesthetic approach, to eliminate much of the tension and resulting injury associated with technique as it is traditionally taught.

Having recently celebrated his fortieth year of teaching in the United States in 2006, Howard was trained at the Cone-Ripman School (now the Arts Educational School) in London. At age 16, he received the Adeline Genee Medal, the highest honor a British dance student can earn. In addition to numerous credits in films, commercials and on the stage, he has been a soloist with Sadler’s Wells Theatre Ballet (now The Royal Ballet), and has danced with the National Ballet of Canada. At the invitation of Rebekah Harkness, he began his teaching career in 1966 at the Harkness Ballet School in New York City, and in 1977 opened his own school adjacent to Lincoln Center. His classes have become the mainstay in the professional training of some of the most elite dancers in the field. He currently teaches classes at Steps on Broadway and Broadway Dance Center, as well as the New School University’s Eugene Lang College, and returns regularly to Europe to teach at The Royal Ballet in London and to work with companies in Denmark, Germany, Holland and Sweden. He has guest taught for companies including American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and National Ballet of Canada. Howard is the recipient of numerous awards and distinctions, including being the 2007 educational spokesperson for National Dance Week. Prominent on the boards of many dance-affiliated companies and publications, Howard has also made 115 CDs and videos of classical instruction.
